Stoichiometry

The study of relationship between the amounts of reactants and products as indicated by the balanced chemical equation is called stoichiometry.

Explanation:

Stoichiometry is used to calculate the amount of the product formed or that of the reactant required in a reaction.

Stoichiometric calculations are performed by the following assumptions in hand:

  1. Reactants are completely converted into products.
  2. No side-reaction occurs.
  3. Stoichiometry calculations are based on the two laws of chemical combinations:

(a) Law of Conservation of Mass

(b) Law of Definite Proportions

Types of relationships, which can be studied with the help of stoichiometry,

1) Mass – Mass relationship:

From the given mass of a substance, mass of the any other substance can be calculated.

2) Mass – Mole relationship:

From the given mass of a substance, moles of the any other substance can be

calculated. Reverse of it can also be done.

3) Mass – Volume relationship:

From the given mass of a substance, volume of the any gaseous substance can be

calculated. Reverse of it can also be done.
